Dual vs. Single Semi Truck Exhaust Stacks
Ask fifty truckers about dual vs. single semi truck exhaust stacks and you'll get fifty different opinions. Knowing the key differences between the two exhaust systems helps you decide which setup best balances your rig's needs and your personal preferences and budget.
Whether you have to repair or replace your current stack or simply want to change the look of your truck, Truck Pipes USA has all the high-quality, dependable components you need.
Key Differences Between Dual vs. Single Stack Exhaust Systems
Choosing a single or dual stack exhaust comes down to their look and sound, as well as their impact on performance and efficiency. But don't decide on a setup before also considering if you have the space for double stacks, or want to take on the additional weight and costs.
Aesthetics and Style
A single stack exhaust sits on one side of your rig, giving it a "one-armed" appearance. Dual stacks, with one on each side, provide a more symmetrical look. Truckers who want to give their rigs an old-school look may choose double stacks to mimic certain older models.
If you like that look, you can choose to install a "dummy" stack that doesn't emit exhaust, without the additional cost of another muffler and other components. A dummy stack can be connected to the exhaust system but blocked or bolted to the truck to give the dual stack appearance.
If you have a weed burner or hidden exhaust, you can choose a complete dummy system for aesthetic reasons only. This is a good option if you don't want to risk compliance issues related to modifying your current exhaust system.
Performance and Efficiency
More efficient exhaust gas expulsion can lead to a minor increase in engine output by reducing backpressure. This contributes to the overall impact of the exhaust system on fuel efficiency. The question is how much difference a dual stack system makes.
Most modern trucks have efficient engines with a single exhaust outlet after the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems. Routing this exhaust through two stacks may provide some, but negligible, performance and efficiency upgrades.
Keep in mind that you cannot bypass or remove the DPF or SCR on your rig. If you install a dual stack system that bypasses them, you will reduce engine performance and increase harmful emissions, breaking the law.
Sound
A truck with dual stacks generally produces deeper and louder exhaust noise than one with a single stack. For some, this sound makes a desirable statement. The added rumble may also keep truckers safer on the road. It alerts other drivers that a big rig is present, and may, for example, make them think twice about stopping short to catch an exit.
Be mindful of noise standards that vary across states. A loud rig exhaust system may be fine in one state but hit excessive noise levels once you cross state lines. Enforcement of these noise standards may be rare, but you need to decide whether you're willing to take that risk.
Weight and Space
Dual stacks add more weight to your truck. They also take up precious space, so they may be less practical if you need maximum payload or space efficiency. Space considerations could make a big difference if you have a sleeper cab and can't afford to give up any more real estate.
However, on some trucks, having two smaller-diameter stacks rather than one larger-diameter stack can be a space advantage. Depending on your rig setup, two smaller stacks may allow you to route around the sleeper cab and distribute heat away from a single point.
Cost and Maintenance
Dual systems may require twice the parts in your exhaust system. True dual stack setups mean two mufflers, additional clamps, and other components. Even dummy stacks require pipes and hardware that represent initial, maintenance, and potential replacement costs.
During an inspection, if you have one muffler up to legal standards and the other not, you face being out of service. This may make a dummy system more practical.
Is a Single Stack or Double Stack Right for Your Semi?
If you want to squeeze every bit of performance and efficiency from your engine and exhaust system, a dual stack may be the answer. But for most modern trucks, the difference is negligible, and you have to consider the added expense of a dual stack.
For most truckers, the decision comes down to practicality and aesthetics. Single or dual stacks may be more practical depending on the space available behind your cab, especially if it is a sleeper. You know your truck better than anybody, and you know how you want it to look and sound.
